The previous article (read here) about The Ordinary gave you an idea about the company and its best sellers but I am sure by now you are probably wondering which products to choose based on your different skin needs.
Let me tell you something : The Ordinary has various products for every single need. Even if you have the oiliest skin, the deepest wrinkles or more ”medical” conditions like hyperpigmentation , The Ordinary is here for you! Let’s look through the options together shall we…
I know…Oily skin is like a nightmare, especially if nothing works for you. The ”oil” is actually called sebum and is produced by the sebaceous glands to keep your skin healthy.
The problem with oily skin is that your glands are producing way too much sebum than needed and this may be hormonal but it can also depend on changes in the weather and your lifestyle/skincare routine.
If you want to get rid of the excess oil you have to try the following products:
Salicylic acid is the greatest ingredient for oily skin. It penetrates deep into your skin and unclogges your pores so you will no longer have blackheads and pimples.
Salicylic acid will also regulate the sebum production.
You can also try the salicylic acid mask. As an acid, it may cause severe sunburns so it recommended to use it during your night routine and always use sunscreen after its use.
It is also a good option for exfoliation but for the outter layer of your skin. It is really gentle and actually moisturizing so it can even be used on sensitive skin.
If you are not familiar with acids, you better start with the 5% option .
Don’t forget to avoid direct sun exposure after the use and use a sunscreen to protect you from the sunburns.
I swear this mask is a gamechanger! It contains both lactic and salicylic acid (also glycolic, tartaric, citric) and exfoliates your outer and inner skin layers.
This amazing mask reduces oil production, blackheads, dark spots, fine lines and smoothes your wrinkles.
You totally have to try it but only if you are experienced in acids!
Don’t forget to wash your face regularly. It is very important to wash your face 2 a day in order remove all the dirt and oil but don’t overwash as this results to overproduction of the sebum.
Also, it really important to keep your skin moisturized(choose an oil-free cream) otherwise sebum will overproduce again so as to moisturize your face.
Do not use acids during summertime.
Dry skin is also a mess. Your face is most likely to appear red, with flakes and you may feel a weird sensation like your skin is very stretched.
Dry skin must not be confused with dehydrated skin. Dehydration is a medical condition that can happen even if your skin is oily and it is an internal problem.
Dry skin is most likely to appear if you live in a very cold climate, if you over-wash and as you start aging.
I suggest you to stick to a very simple skincare routine, first you cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser ( I recommend using a cleansing milk, like this one here.) and then you must moisturize your skin and lock in the moisture with a light oil.
I recommend using the following product:
Hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold up to 1000 times its molecular weight in water and penetrates into your skin binding water to skin cells.
It is really important to buy the right hyaluronic acid as only the ones with low molecular weight has this ability.
Also, it boosts the collagen production and smoothes the fine wrinkles.
Tip: Use the hyaluronic acid on wet face , just after you washed it and then apply your favourite cream to lock the moisture.
Aging can start really early so you have to start caring about that also early.
It starts at about at the age 25 when collagen production starts to decline and when the production starts to limit, your skin appears thin, saggy and transparent.
However, the main cause of aging is the sun exposure. UV light create free radicals that cause oxidative stress to our cells. Oxidative stress activates some enzymes that break down the collagen and damage cells’ DNA.
So, if you want to eliminate your wrinkles and fine lines and to protect your skin from further damage , I recommend the following products:
This form of vitamin A is the anti-aging superstar. Retinol reduces wrinkles by speeding up the skin’s natural exfoliation and boosts collagen production firming your skin.
It is considered the best solution to existing wrinkles and it works really well on reducing the size of your pores also.
Retinol can’t be used during summer and when using it, sunscreen is a must.
This is a powerful antioxidant that fights the free radicals produced due to exposure to UV light causing premature aging.
Also, it has whitening and anti-inflammatory properties and boosts collagen production . For better results, combine it with the Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%
The main cause of hyperpigmentation is the sun exposure that cause oxidative stress to your skin leading to the formation of free radicals and to the activation of melanocytes which produce melanin.
In case of overexposure to sun, melanocytes produce more melanin and cause skin coloration. Also, it can be caused by acne and it is named post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
In order to treat hyperpigmentation you have to use a variety of products:
Vitamin C has whitening properties and will erase the dark patches.
It also fights free radicals so it works also as preventative product.
Niacinamide also has whitening properties and it is used to treat hyperpigmentation, reduce dark spots and redness and treat acne.
Retinol is also a great ingredient with amazing whitening properties that is used to treat hyperpigmentation.
It is good to note that all acids work well as treatment for hyperpigmentation so you just have to choose which is best for you!
